Monitoring the Change in Extent of Water-Related Ecosystems

by Amrita Lal

Bangalore, India’s Silicon Valley and capital of Karnataka, is facing a growing water crisis driven by unregulated land use and rapid urban expansion. With a population of approximately 24 million in 2020 and further growth expected, the city’s booming real estate market has replaced vital water ecosystems with urban infrastructure, worsening water scarcity and ecosystem degradation. This study aims to monitor changes in Bangalore’s water-related ecosystems over time, assessing their impact on the city’s water security and quality of life, in line with SDG 6.6, which focuses on protecting and restoring water ecosystems.
